Abstinence is very important to Christians. In the bible it says, "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." 1 Corinthians 6:18-20.
Many people practice this tradition to Christians. In fact they are coming out with a show titled "Virgin Diaries" on TLC. The whole show is about couples who have waited to have sex, and some have waited to even have their first kiss. The advertisement tells it all about the show as a couple awkwardly kisses on their wedding day: http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/virgin-diaries-virgin-diaries-sneak-peek.html
This shows that people still do remain true to God's Word that sex should be saved until marriage. However, most people don't stay true to this even if they are Christians. Myself, being a Christian, was always taught to save sex till marriage. This could be one of the many reasons why people don't think Christians are true to themselves. I know that many people look down upon Christians just because they associate themselves with God. No matter what the religion or lack of religion is, it should be known that teen pregnancy is not a good thing. Birth control is a science technology that was created to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Technology like this makes sex more possible, which is good for the non-Christians since they don't have values like Christians. However, Christian advocates don't believe in methods like that. For example, you have the Duggar's on 19 kids and counting who are very strong Christians that obviously don't practice such methods as birth control. Non-Christians probably view such ways of living as crazy. In today's society it is hard to remain abstinent because of how much pressure from society is seen on reality tv shows or just tv or movies in general. It seems like everyone is doing it. Even in my school that was supposed to teach abstinence as part of the health program, the health teacher still taught birth control methods because he knew that it is inevitable that teens aren't having sex. Abstinence is just not reality. The image that is attached argues that even with abstinence in your life, even the Virgin Mary couldn't remain without a child. This gives non-Christians ways to say that abstinence doesn't do it's job. Sex was once special, and now in society it is just another partner to sleep with. Sometimes it doesn't even have meaning associated with (friends with benefits). This way in society makes the non-Christians dominate because of how Christians views are shoved down the gutter. So many people take the purity vow, but many don't follow through with it. This problem with Christians just gives the non-Christians more of a reason to not believe what Christians are saying. It is hard to believe in something that people don't actually follow through with. This is a bad model for Christians. I can see how non believers don't see how sexual purity isn't necessary because how much sex is portrayed in society, but I can also see how Christians believe in sexual purity.
I know this does not relate to what you wrote, but you do understand that your picture is going against Abstinence... and in fact kind of making fun of relgion by saying abstinence doesn't not protect you from pregnancy because "the virgin mary" still got pregnant? There seemed to be a disconnect between your argument and the picture.
ReplyDeleteMy argument is that non-Christians see that even the Virgin Mary still had a child. It gives them ways to think that abstinence is not necessary. I specifically said that " The image that is attached argues that even with abstinence in your life, even the Virgin Mary couldn't remain without a child. This gives non-Christians ways to say that abstinence doesn't do it's job." so I'm not sure if you didn't even read my blog. I was taking the view of non-Christians because that is my opposing view... so yes I am aware that this is making fun of Christians and their view on abstinence.
