Evolution has been a highly controversial topic in the United States since the state of Kansas decided creationism, or intelligent design, must be taught alongside evolution in the public classrooms. Evolution vs Creationism has been debated since Charles Darwin published his book "The Origin of Species". The debate has progressed to being a science vs religion hot button for years. The biggest proponent of the debate in my life has been in the biology class room. One Mr. Don Carmichael of Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire Illinois was one of the biggest proponent for evolution and it all rubbed off on his students. It was taught as a matter of scientific fact that evolution is true.
If evolution is scientific fact then why is it a highly debated topic in America? There are many people in the United States that believe in creationism. Most of these people are regarded by the scientific community as "religious nuts" and their views are disregarded. However, at what point does the argument get disregarded. When a double standard governs the rules of proof for this debate. Evolution has been subjected to the rules of science and has for the most part passed the tests. Creationalism however, mostly take any holes in the argument of evolution and claim that since there is any hole, then creationism must be the truth. No test has or can be done to prove creationism yet people still choose to believe in it. Being a mostly logical person I find it hard to believe in creationalism by the sheer lack of facts. However, it must be recognized that evolution is not all inclusive and there are questions that need to be answered to get the full purpose.
One of the options for the quiz taken in class was that there is a higher power yet there is also no intervening in the day to day lives of people. This personally is how I feel. This feeling can also lead a bridge across the gap of creationism and evolution. The gap may be large and the bridge may be weak, but one proposed bridge is better than none. In a world where there is a higher power, it is not too unreasonable to believe that the higher power didn't set the world up to act as it does. I know many feel this is farfetched, yet if a higher power set the world up as it is and then has no intervention in it, evolution can run its course. This is a sensitive topic to many and what is written is only merely the personal beliefs of one individual. One side doesn't have to be wrong. Compromise can be reached if worked enough. Everybody can come out a winner.
