This billboard has gone up in Arizona, along with 11 different styles. It all has to do with the "Freedom From Religion 'Out of the Closet' campaign." The subject position is religion in the world today and the different beliefs everyone chooses to have. The specific claim in this billboard is that this man doesn't need faith to continue to live, which is true...there are many non believers that are still breathing with the rest of us believers.
The core focus of this billboard is the argument of religions. This foundation is trying to reach out to people who aren't sure which end of the spectrum they're on. They are trying to convince them that you don't need faith in order to go on with your life, you can be a non-believer and still live a happy and fulfilling life. In the picture they make the man look like a clean cut older guy, holding his cute fluffy dog. I think the reason they did that is because they want it to make it look like the stereotypical innocent old guy, still a good person, and he can still be an atheist.
Many people believe that atheists are terrible people, who have no moral code, but in reality foundations like this are trying to reach out to people and let them know that that isn't true. Atheists can still be good people, they just don't need religion to prove that to anyone. This issue is a huge stumbling block because the argument of people's beliefs are always going to be an issue in our society. Atheists argue that believers are only using their faith as a crutch, as a way to comfort themselves from all of the bad in the world, and believers argue that atheists are doomed and there is no hope for them in the afterlife.
What needs to be done to inherent this conflict is that people need to be more accepting of each person's chosen faith and beliefs. I myself am a Christian and I know nothing about atheists except for the fact that they choose not to believe in any sort of higher power. Do I know for a fact that they are all bad people? No I don't. Do I know for a fact that they are doomed? No I don't. I think that is the main issue embedded in this bigger issue. Believers don't understand non-believers and non-believers don't understand believers. None of us understand each other. That is why it is so much easier to continue to put down the other and refuse to think that their beliefs are right. Obviously no one will ever be able to keep people from voicing their opinions, or putting others down, but I think the main problem with the argument of religion and not having religion at all is that if we're not a part of it, we don't understand it so we have no right to judge one another for what we believe in. If everyone is granted freedom of speech, and freedom of choice rights then we obviously have the freedom of choosing our own religions/beliefs. Why should anyone convince us that what we have chosen isn't right?
I agree that freedom of religion is a large conflict between individuals. Many people gain their beliefs from beliefs their family members possess and they stick to these beliefs and become too stuborn to try to learn about any others. No matter what religion a person believes, we almost all believe in something and that is what makes us similar to one another. People need to be more open minded to other's beliefs and not so stubborn about only their own.
ReplyDeleteI found this billboard very interesting. I'm also a Christian, but I don't believe there is anything wrong with being Atheist. I definitely don't think they are bad people, and I don't see it as a cop out. I can understand not knowing what to believe. We are told so many things growing up that it is hard to decide what is true and what is false. Religion is a very touchy subject for many people, but I think everyone needs to be more accepting and understanding when it comes to what others beleive.
