When I went on google images and typed in the word nerd, I wasn't surprised at all when pictures of frail looking young men wearing glasses popped up. This is the way society portrays people who wear glasses. There are a multitude of things that people identify as "nerdy" but wearing glasses is easily the most common. Many people assume that simply because one wears glasses, they must be smart or good at math. In some ways, people who wear glasses are conditioned to try harder to achieve good grades. I didn't get contact until I was a junior in high school, and people always assumed I was good at academics. I think that is one of the reasons many people want to get contacts. They want to escape the sterotypes and expectations that many people associate or have about people who wear glasses. People who wear glasses are a culture of their own, because the rest of society has made them that way.

I completely agree with this post. When I was in junior high I found out I needed glasses, but I did not want to wear them to school. I waited until my contacts got delivered before my vision in school would be improved. Looking back on it now, I realize how stereotypical and dumb I was being, but I really did not want people to see me wearing glasses. It's a shame that just because people need to wear glasses they are classified as nerdy or a geek. But on the bright side, in today's world, glasses are becoming more and more of a fashion statement!
ReplyDeleteThe whole idea of wearing glasses is more of a fashion statement than a necessity in today's society. Even if a persons sight needs correction, glasses are merely an option. There are alternatives such as contact lenses or corrective surgery. The people who wear glasses wear them for fashion purposes. Ray Ban's are worn to make a statement instead of for correctional purposes. While I do agree with the fact that the stereotypical nerd wears glasses, I wouldn't necessarily agree with the idea that all glasses are associated with being a nerd.
