I'm not sure why it's doing this.... Sorry, I swear I tried fixing it multiple times!
Some signs to pick up on throughout the commercial: First, you have a "white" male doing yard work until something catches his eye. The man is wearing a cap, and a plaid shirt like a lumberjack or an "ordinary Joe", clipping away the bush. Does something seem strange though? Despite his more American attire, he looks slightly.... Hispanic, not to mention the Latin American music in the background. These aspects of the subject might be stereotyping the connection of corn chips with Hispanics.
You see a bowl of triangular corn chips and a drink. The guy stops clipping and starts licking his lips, obviously checking something out. The color of the bowl and the girly drink makes you assume that the people by the bowl are female, only to be later revealed that they are male and it is pretty clear that the author wants the reader to take the position in assuming that they are gay specifically from the cut off shorts, fit and tanned bodies, and girly voices as they say “Hi, Barbara.”
Then, his wife/gf/female friend gives him a drink and notices him checking out (from her view) the two guys lying out by the pool, in which she responds with a disgusting look on her face. Is it just me or does the female figure of the commercial look semi-Asian?
Maybe Doritos liked it because it was trying to hit as many regions of the world as they could (because one of the “gay” men look African American as well) while stereotyping how homosexuality is viewed, as well as note some possible reactions to it, hoping it would be a culturally economical hit with people. Maybe they just thought it would do well.
Whatever the case, it never aired on TV as there was a decent amount of controversy around it.
