Evolution of the Hipster.

How could I possibly resist posting a blog on the term "hipster?" Modern bohemians, aka "hipsters", aka "indie people", have such a controversial role in today's society. It seemed to be that at the starting point of the hipster trend, it was found acceptable, and maybe even possibly looked up to. Some thought it was different, yet they weren't horrifically opposed to the idea. Others thought the idea of wearing knitted sweaters with scarves and beanies while reciting Edgar Allen Poe was too good to pass up. And for the rest of us? Well, we might have found the trend to be somewhat promising, possibly even trying it out once or twice. As the time progressed, so did the social stigma revolving around your average hipster. Calling someone a "hipster" today would be like telling someone a "your mom" joke in 2007. According to society, hipsters are over-populating the world with their "I'm not normal" attitudes. Today's average hipster seems to be about as awesome as yesterday's meatloaf.
There are obviously many different positions to the idea of being a hipster. Many people completely disregard the stereotypes revolving around the trend, and decide to make it their own. Others decide to bash the idea every chance they get, clearly stating their dislike for Shakespeare and Starbucks lovers. I feel like the signifier and signified all depend on your stance on the topic. Someone completely loving the fashion, music, and lifestyle involving being a "hipster" isn't going to care about the infamous characteristics and labels that come with the trend.
I find the topic to be very interesting, and especially ironic. From my own experiences, I have come across a hefty number of hipster haters sporting the very trends they despise, and many indie flick lovers ready to fight to the death, defending this emerging and slightly infamous movement. I am even more curious as to see what all of your opinions are on our average hipster. Are you a liberal sweater wearing devotee, or do you simply detest fedoras and polaroid film?

  1. I know exactly what you mean! In these arguments, I always claim that hipsterdom have become so mainstream that hipsters by definition can no longer exist. Problem solved :)
