What drives a person to lie stick straight, hands at their sides for hours on end on top of a pole? Or maybe even on top of an unoccupied police car? This new cultural trend, otherwise known as planking, has many onlookers puzzled and wondering why one would want to do such a thing. The truth is, many plankers enjoy the look of bewilderment on the faces passing by. Planking goes against the grain, against what is seen to be 'normal' in society. This is perhaps what draws so many people to it. Many believe planking began about fourteen years ago when two young boys weree contemplating what they could possibly do for fun. Others think that the idea of planking originated from times of slavery. While traveling on ships, slaves were forced to lay in the same 'planking' position, crammed together in small spaces. Because of this, some people take great offense to the act. Despite this, planking has exploded on an international scale. From Australia, to Europe, to the U.S., people have begun to add planking to their list of favorite leisure activities. Planking inspires people all over to think creatively and to push the boundaries of both the body and belief. Some bring it to another level that is more dangerous. The first death due to planking was documented in Australia when a young man fell seven stories to his death. Because of this, police belive this activity should be regulated and closely watched. This begs the question; Is planking too over the top or is it simply an interesting and inventive new way to pass the time?
This is such a great post! When I first saw my friends posting planking pictures all over facebook and twitter I was so confused, but then it became normal and almost like a competition to see who could plank in the strangest, craziest places. Police cars, buildings, bike racks etc.. it is very exhilarating to watch and look at. When you pull apart planking and the meaning of it, I found it quite interesting that it dated back to slavery and the 90s. Overall I think this is relatable for a lot of students and definitely a new way to think creatively.
