When thinking about what to choose for this blog post, I could think of no Romantic more popular right now than Taylor Swift. Whether you love her or hate her, her music makes you feel something. Her song "Fearless" is about liking someone so much that you're not afraid of anything that could happen. You're just so caught up in the moment and being with that person that nothing else matters. They make you feel fearless.
I absolutely love this song. It makes me so happy every time I listen to it that I can't help but smile. It is filled with Romantic characteristics: intuition over knowledge, individual over collective, innocence over experience. I'm such a sucker for love songs and songs with lyrics I can relate to. When I listen to this song, I feel like she's just one of my friends telling me about an amazing first date she just had. I get butterflies in my stomach because I know how she's feeling, and I'm excited for her.
I had my boyfriend listen to this song, and he had a completely different reaction to it. He just sat there and asked why I made him listen to it. When I told him it was a really good song, he just laughed. He didn't really take the time to listen to the lyrics or think about their meaning. He obviously is not a Taylor Swift fan, and he obviously cannot relate to a teenage girl singing about how happy being with a boy makes her feel. I feel like most boys would respond this way when listening to this song because most guys I know don't listen to Taylor Swift and analyze the lyrics the way most girls I know do.
Guys are taught to be tough and listen to rock and roll, rap, alternative, etc. Culture has brought them up this way, whereas, girls listen to music as an escape. When I'm listening to music, I'm looking for the best lyrics that convey the most meaningful message. I love songs that make me feel something. I don't listen to music just to rock out (well, not most of the time anyway).
How much something affects us depends on how much we can relate to it. I know the feeling of coming back from a first date and being so happy that nothing else mattered. When she says in the song that he makes her want to dance in a storm in her best dress, fearless, I understand how big of a deal that really is. Girls don't ruin their best dresses for just anyone! Even if a girl hasn't experienced what Taylor is singing about in this song, it makes them want to experience it someday. Who wouldn't want to feel that way about someone?
I wrote a post about Taylor Swift and her songs also! Taylor Swift's music is a perfect example of romanticism for teenagers! Her lyrics are so easy to relate to, and i believe this is so because she writes them herself!
