I, like the other girl who chose to do this scene, am a complete sucker for romantic movies with happy endings. I love nothing more than when the two main characters fall in love and live happily ever after. I blame this on the countless hours I spent watching Disney movies as a child. The scene I chose is the second or third to last scene in the movie, I believe, where the commander has broken the windows on Jake's pod, and the gasious air is seeping into it. Jake cannot breathe the air without a mask and is asleep in his chamber. When the lack of breathable air wakes him up, he tries to get out of his chamber and reach the masks but does make it before passing out on the floor. Neytiri rushes into the pod, sees him lying there, grabs the mask, and puts it on Jake's face. She holds him, with a worried expression on her face, until he comes to. When he finally does come to, they stroke each others' faces and say, "I see you." They sit there looking lovingly into each others' eyes for a few more moments until it cuts to the next scene.
I absolutely loved this moment. It gave me the shivers. It was really trying to show that true love is blind. Neytiri was still in love with Jake even when she saw him in his paralyzed human form, and Jake loved Neytiri even though she was a ginormous blue alien creature. By saying, "I see you," the scene is trying to show they see past their appearances to who they are on the inside. If someone is beautiful on the inside, it shouldn't matter what they look like on the outside. People can't help who (or what) they fall in love with. Watching this scene, I had a huge smile on my face. I was so happy that they both survived the fighting and could finally be together (happily ever after! Yay!). I was worried that when Neytiri saw Jake in his human form, she would view him differently, so I was extremely relieved when she didn't.
The whole "happily ever after" thing is very overdone in movies, but I can't say that I mind. Like I said before, I love romantic movies with happy endings. They are pretty much the best things ever. This movie was stressful for me to watch, though, because it really kept me guessing about which characters were going to survive the fighting. I was very concerned either Jake or Neytiri would die, and that would completely ruin the ending for me. I can honestly say, if one of them would have died, I would probably be an Avatar hater instead of an Avatar lover. I think this is something movie writers need to keep in mind when writing scripts. They need to think long and hard about how a certain ending will affect viewers, and what ending will bring them the most positive feedback. I know I'm not the only sucker for happy endings, so I believe this was a very well-thought decision on the writers' part. I loved it.
It would be extremely interesting to see a guy's point of view on this scene and opinion on the "happily ever after" phenomenon. I would bet they would have an entirely different take on it than I do.
I like the similarities you found between this movie that was supposed to be out of the ordinary, but still fit in with all the other movies that exist. It is romantic and of course they end up together in the end. Movies like this just make love seem so passionate and real. We have been growing up with them since the princess days. I had just seen parts of Avatar and not the whole thing in one sitting. I just found it so hard to focus, but when I had to do it for analyzing I paid closer attention and saw that it wasn't just a movie about mythical creatures like I had always had in my mind. They had real feelings too, and this included love.
