I chose to analyze the scene where Jake awakens in his new avatar body. I chose this scene because the definition of what makes someone human, and what makes them not is very interesting to me. Jake went from being considered a “human” to being considered an avatar because he was now transformed into a new body that could survive in Pandora’s environment.
Although he physically does not look the same, his avatar is simply an empty body waiting for life to be placed within it. Jake awakens and immediately wants to go out in the environment and explore this new body he has been put into.
Another aspect I focused on in this scene was that the audience is able to see the avatar body next to the humans, and we are able to compare the difference between the two. From outside appearance it is obvious the avatars differ in many ways, especially size. These differences do not seem to bother Jake in any way, in fact, he seems very happy and excited to explore this new body he is given. A big reason for this is probably because this new body gives him the ability to walk which is not something he was able to do in his human body.
Overall, we see that Jake is now considered an avatar because of his outside appearance. This fact alone shows that many people consider someone human or simply judge them because of what they see on the outside, and not as much as what is within that outside appearance. The audience immediately gets the idea that Jake is a new person, when in reality he is the same person he was while he was human. It seems as though the movie was meant to first give us the sense that the avatars are this very strange being, but then showing Jake’s comfortableness and excitement to be in this body, is to give the audience the idea that the avatars are much like humans. When Jake runs out of the doctor’s room he encounters the outdoors, and we see other avatars and humans engaging in the same physical activities. This also gives us the sense that these avatars are a lot like humans because they engage in the same activities that humans do, and in the same ways. After watching this scene, I got the idea that the producers were trying to possibly give the audience the same experience/feelings that Jake was going through.

I think this a great scene to analyze because it's probably one of the most important parts in the movie. I like how you are pondering on the question of what makes someone human, and what makes them not. I feel like everyone has a different opinion on that and that's what it makes it such a difficult question to tackle. I agree with you on the fact that the producers were probably trying to get the audience to feel what Jake was feeling. I think they did a good job with that.
ReplyDeleteIt's really true what you said about us judging others on their outward appearance. The avatars are similiar to humans, but the minor differences set them apart, just like the minor differences in our culture seperates us.
ReplyDeleteI think you chose a very good signifier, the body. We know in this movie what is happening or where it is taking place because of the visual cues we see whether it is an avatar or a human. That is a very good comparison that the avatars were doing things humans like to do. I also really enjoy the image you chose to upload. It is really powerful to me.
