The powerful scene I chose from Avatar was Jake's first
flight scene. I think this scene tries to make the reader feel happy for him
being able to fly. The lighting, the plants, the different wonders of the planet of Pandora bring you into an entirely new world, it zaps you into a dreamlike fantasy. These signifiers bring you into the fantasy, and they mean that this world is where dreams come true, in my opinion. Becoming a different creature in a whole new world has given Jake an opportunity to make his dreams come true. It also makes you feel
heartbroken a little bit because he has never been able to do this and now he
can. I think this scene also makes you feel a bit of joy watching Jake flying
over Pandora and in a way you get to experience the new found freedom he's
feeling in this moment. The argument I'm trying to make for this scene is that
dreams can become our reality even if no one else experiences it with us. At
the beginning of the movie he talks about his dreams of flying and it seems odd
to the audience because he is a paraplegic. Now that he is working on his
initiation into this new planet he is given this opportunity and his dream is becoming
a reality to him. Nobody is with him except the creature that is helping him
fly and it becomes even more powerful in that moment. He wished he could fly
and the world of Pandora is allowing him to do that. It feeds our idea of
fantasy more than anything because it makes the viewer’s wish something like
this could actually happen. We all crave the impossible and want our dreams to
become reality and in a way they can. The movie Avatar makes us think about all
of the craziest possibilities and it gives us some sense of hope. Maybe some
people see it as false hope and think this could never happen, but who’s to
judge what each of us may think we may have experienced. This could happen to any
of us if our imaginations are crazy enough. This scene makes the impossible
seem possible. And I think this whole movie makes our dreams have some hope of
becoming reality.
I have to agree this is a very powerful scene in Avatar. We are drawn in to feel happy for Jake, and it seems as if the looks of the environment(pandora) are used to emphasize that. Like you said the extroidanary views/wonders of Pandora bring us into a dream, and we can almost feel as if we are experiencing the flight also. This is also similar in the scene when Jake first woke up in his new body.
