An example of romantic in action for me would have to be Ross and Rachel from Friends. Through all ten seasons of Friends this couple was on-again, off-again more times than I can remember. The writers of the show would always hint that maybe they were going to get back together again like when Ross said Rachel's name when he was about to marry someone else or the multiple times where Ross and Rachel would clearly be jealous of who the other person was dating but never admit to it. Through the whole ten seasons the writers teased the viewers by bringing them together and then breaking them up keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat.
However during the season finale Rachel is about to move to Paris and just a day before she is supposed to leave Ross realizes that he has to tell her how he feels. During the day she has left he can never find a right time to tell her how he feels and before he knows it she is on the way to the airport. Ross realizes he NEEDS to tell her before she leaves so he has Phoebe drive him to the airport and luckily he just catches her. Rachel is so surprised to see him that she boards the plane anyway not knowing what to say. Ross goes back to his apartment and soon enough Rachel is there too and it is obvious that they are going to get back together.
One of the main techniques of tv writers is to create a couple that everyone roots for but take a while for them to finally get together. The writers of friends keep the viewer interested by dragging out the will they? won't they? aspect of Ross and Rachel's relationship. There are many examples of tv writers using this technique like Meredith and Derek from Grey's Anatomy or Pam and Jim from the Office. I think many people will admit that once these couples were put together for good the show was less interesting and this is definitely reflected in the ratings. However Friends pulled this technique off perfectly waiting until the last 10 mintues of the series to bring Ross and Rachel together for good.
There's nothing more that Friends fans could want than for Ross and Rachel to fall in love :) Their relationship was all over the place and it created so much suspense for the viewers, but once they were back on-again, it was so happy and heartwarming to see. It gave you that fuzzy feeling inside and made you smile at the TV. Having them be together for good in the end left the viewer with a lasting romantic impression on the show.
ReplyDeleteI was always cheering for Ross and Rachel to get together for good! I feel like secretly even guys watching Friends wanted them to be together. I mean, why wouldn't you? They were completely perfect for each other! When they weren't together, I was always hoping their current relationship would end as soon as possible so they could get back together. When they were together, it was so much fun to watch because they had such great chemistry, I couldn't help but smile. The show could not have ended in a better way, in my opinion.
